The Energy You Bring: Why Your State of Mind Shapes Your Dog

At Mutt and Tumble, we believe dog training starts with the human. Before a command is given, before a leash correction is made, and before progress ever happens, your dog is reading one thing first — your energy.

In the animal world, energy is identity. It tells others who is stable, who is unsure, who is safe to follow, and who is not. The ideal energy for leadership is calm, assertive, and confident. This is the state your dog instinctively trusts. It creates safety, structure, and clarity.

On the other hand, sympathy, anxiety, fear, anger, frustration, and nervousness are unbalanced energies. Dogs feel this immediately. When your energy is unsettled, leadership becomes unclear. When leadership is unclear, dogs often step in to fill the gap — and that’s when behavior problems begin to grow.

We know it’s a lot to ask someone to always be calm and steady, especially when life is stressful and your dog is struggling. At Mutt and Tumble, we understand this on a personal level. Our foundation was built through recovery, growth, and learning how structure can change a life. Becoming someone better didn’t happen overnight. It took consistency, self-awareness, and a commitment to showing up differently each day.

The same applies here.

Your dog doesn’t need perfection. Your dog needs effort. The goal isn’t to never feel stress, frustration, or fear. The goal is to become aware of it, work through it, and move closer to a calm, grounded state. As you grow, your dog follows.

We are a family-centered business because we believe growth happens inside the home. When one person becomes more patient, more structured, and more steady, the entire environment changes. Your dog feels that shift. And that shift creates real transformation.

A Hands-On Exercise: Reset Your Energy Before You Lead

This simple exercise helps you become more mindful of your state before working with your dog.

The 60-Second Reset:

  1. Stand still with your dog on leash.

  2. Take 5 slow, deep breaths.

  3. Drop your shoulders and relax your jaw.

  4. Focus only on standing calm and steady.

  5. Then begin walking — slowly and with purpose.

That’s it.

This short pause helps you reset your mind and body before asking anything of your dog. Over time, it trains you to show up more grounded and intentional. And when your energy becomes calmer, your dog naturally starts to settle and follow.

Leadership isn’t loud. It isn’t forceful. It’s steady, clear, and consistent.

At Mutt and Tumble, we’re not just helping dogs learn new behaviors. We’re helping people grow into stronger, more confident leaders for their families — both human and canine. Because when you change your energy, you change the entire relationship.
